Robert Akin Joseph Mitchell, of Hancock, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at his home.
Born August 4, 1935, in Mankato, Ks., he was the son of the late Hurbert A. and Ruth (Pantler) Mitchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Belva Hall, in October, 2002.
He retired as a self-employed small engine repair mechanic.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in both Korea and Vietnam, and he held the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) upon retiring.
He was a life-time member of both the Hancock Memorial Post 10502 V.F.W., and the local American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary A. (Walters) Mitchell; one son, Michael Akin Mitchell; three daughters, Susanne Christine Mitchell, in Ks., Donna Robin Mitchell, and Ruth B.H.E. Mitchell; one grandson, Jeffrey A. Mitchell, in Ks.; one step-son, Jason Babonik, in La.; one step-daughter, Pamela N. Walters, in Cumberland, Md.; one step-grandson, James E.E. Woods, in Cumberland, Md.; a sister, Phillis Gleeson and husband, Edward, of Salina, Ok.; one niece; five nephews; and a life-time friend, Frederick (Fred) Williams.
No funeral services or visitation will be conducted, in accordance with Mr. Mitchell's wishes, with the exception that Military Honors will be conducted at the Md. Veterans Rocky Gap Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family requests that any memorial donations, in his name, may be made to the Department of Maryland V.F.W., Wounded Warrior Project, War Memorial Building, Room J, 101 North Gay Street, Baltimore, 21202-4043.
All arrangements were handled by the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md.
