Wayne Ward

Wayne Conard Ward, born November 24, 1946, was raised on Black Oak Ridge in Fulton County, Pennsylvania and went to his heavenly home on Monday, January 17, 2022. He attended Southern Fulton schools.

Wayne had a very strong faith and trust in the Lord. He had a great respect for his fellow man and lived by the golden rule. He was always there to help his neighbors and cared deeply for them.

Many referred to Wayne as a living legend, a diamond in the rough, a real cowboy. He participated in several Western Films with his horses and wagons and enjoyed going on the Wagon Train with his mules and horses. He and his team would often take people on wagon rides along the canal .  He loved to watch old westerns and listen to Johnny Cash. He was a great story teller and used his colorful language to make people laugh.  He had an intense love of animals that was beyond compare. When asked if he knew anything about horses he would say, "I know the head from the tail". Most called him the "Mule Man". His relationship with mules, horses, and donkeys was unsurpassed. He spoke their language. He learned to blacksmith from his father and could doctor his animals whenever needed. Many friends would call Wayne to ask for his expertise in handling and doctoring their horses. He had a wealth of information on animals that was way beyond his years.

Starting at a very young age, Wayne worked in the woods, logging with horses and mules alongside his father, Gilbert Ward, and his grandfather, Con Smith. He loved to go to town with his grandfather and plow gardens. He often used his animals and  horse equipment to tend to his own farm. He also loved his tractors. His John Deere's and New Holland were some of his prized possesions.

Wayne worked close with horses at Charles Town Race Track for many years. He retired from the Maryland State Highway  where he made lifelong friends. He was a member of the Berkeley Springs Moose Lodge and the Hancock Lioness Lions Club.

Wayne married his wife, Jeanne, almost 45 years ago. They shared a love of animals and all of God's creations. They enjoyed going on daily rides, caring for their farm, and just being together.  They were a team.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Jeanne, and their menagerie of animals including  goats, donkeys, a draft horse, a pony, cats, and their sidekick, Chance the dog.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gib Ward, his brother, Robin Ward, his mother, Mabel Ward and his grandparents, Conard and Oeda Smith. He left behind many cousins and friends.

There will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will take place in May. It would have been Wayne and Jeanne's 45th wedding anniversary.

Wayne Ward will be missed.
